Education for Sustainability Masterclass

Professional development that gets you unstuck with sustainability

  • Are you struggling to bring sustainability up the priority list despite knowing this is key to growing thriving 21st century citizens?

  • Are you finding it hard to get other educators onboard with sustainability at your service?

  • Are you unsure what to do next with sustainability, beyond gardening and composting?

  • Are you frustrated that your sustainability efforts in your centre keep fizzling out?

It’s totally understandable if you’re feeling a bit stuck – and it’s not your fault. Most organisations plateau with sustainability education because of common misconceptions around what it is.

But what if we could help you and your colleagues reframe sustainability in early childhood education in a way that inspires, energises and makes everyone feel seen and valued?

How would things change at your service if educators realised that:

  • They are already doing more than they think when it comes to sustainability?

  • They can tap into their strengths, interests and experiences to drive education for sustainability, no matter what those are?

  • They can weave sustainability throughout day-to-day routines, stories and conversations?

  • They can turn everyday play into learning for a sustainable future while focusing on what brings them energy?

How this masterclass reduces overwhelm and moves educators towards action

Dorothée taps into extensive cross-disciplinary research across both Western and Indigenous perspectives on sustainability to help you identify and implement what children need today to thrive within the limits of the planet tomorrow.

Sustainability isn’t a subject to be taught separately, instead, it’s a process and an outcome which requires changes in how we think and what we do. Thinking of sustainability as just “the green stuff” isn’t just technically incorrect, it narrows our views of what sustainability looks like in ECE, while appealing to only a few educators.

The good news is that you’re likely already doing more than you think when it comes to driving education for sustainability – and we’ll show you how to grow this throughout your centre while also re-energising your educators in their day-to-day. It’s very motivating for educators to realise how they are already contributing.

In this masterclass, we also demonstrate how you can activate the whole of the EYLF 2.0 to deepen education for sustainability to nurture thriving 21st century citizens.

This masterclass helps shift the focus from teaching sustainability as a subject, to teaching everything required to transition to a sustainable world. When we consider education for sustainability as an ongoing holistic endeavour, it’s clear that every educator has something unique to contribute, best done in a way that brings them joy.

The workshop is wonderful; it refreshes the mind and provides more ideas on how to teach young children.

Great in the explanations! Loved the Indigenous perspective you embedded in the presentation. Thanks!

In this masterclass educators will have the opportunity to reflect on their strengths, what brings them joy, and how to tap into both to drive education for sustainability.

We share many tangible examples of how you can turn everyday play experiences into learning for sustainability, to show you what’s possible and that it doesn’t have to be hard or time-consuming.

You’ll also walk away with clear outcomes for children and educators and provocations to support you in coming up with new ideas that build on children’s interests and needs, educators’ strengths and passions, and what works for the centre as a whole.

The best place to start is exactly where you are.

This masterclass acts as a catalyst towards action because it helps educators see that:

  • Education for sustainability is integral to nurturing thriving children and is therefore integral to their role as early childhood educators;

  • Education for sustainability doesn’t have to be more work, it can be weaved into everyday play, routines and conversations in line with EYLF 2.0;

  • They can bring their strengths, interests and experience to education for sustainability; and

  • They can make a huge difference while doing less of what drains them and more of what brings them joy.

Are you ready to learn how to:

  • Approach sustainability holistically to empower educators to support the growth of sustainable 21st century citizens while filling their cups along the way?

  • Activate the whole of the EYLF to weave sustainability into the everyday in a way that means less work, not more?

  • Recognise and document everything you are already doing to drive education for sustainability so that you can grow enthusiasm and momentum for sustainability at your centre?

  • Work as a team to take sustainability from overwhelming to fulfilling?

Thank you Dorothee! I thoroughly enjoyed this workshop. I had sustainability ‘silo’d’ and you’ve expanded my horizons. I’m really looking forward to shifting my thinking to be more circular.
