<image:title>Blog - Gosford Cubbyhouse: case study - Turbulent times bring a gift that most leaders miss: to rebuild differently. Paula Colvin, the new director of Gosford Cubbyhouse, didn't miss this.</image:title>
<image:caption>Gosford Cubbyhouse has been part of its community since 2009 — a not-for-profit community centre with a parent board, 42 children aged 0 to 5, and a homely and lush setting. When Paula arrived as the new director in early 2025, she inherited a team that had been through a challenging period, with a number who had left. Paula saw it as a chance to put sustainability at the heart of the new chapter and build a culture that would be resilient enough to outlast any one person's enthusiasm.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Gosford Cubbyhouse: case study - New director puts sustainability at the heart of the next chapter</image:title>
<image:caption>When we started working with Gosford Cubbyhouse in April 2025, the foundations were already there: a sustainability officer, a garden, worm farm, regular bush walks, play equipment built from reclaimed timber, and regular reuse and repurposing — plus, a sustainability grant had been won the year before. The question then was how to use that grant to drive impact for years to come while leveraging the existing assets of Gosford Cubbyhouse: the strengths of educators, unique setting adjacent to a beautiful nature reserve and a culture of doing more with less.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hunter's story, room leader in the Joeys room — with children aged 0 to 3 — captures this well. In the early coaching sessions, he started with ‘I want to do this - but I am not sure what to do with this age group and I have so many other things I need to prioritise’. But when we looked together at everything already happening in his room — the water from water play being saved for the garden, the reuse of previous years artworks, the repurposing of cardboard boxes to make fun toys, the little workbench in the playground introducing children to repair and risk-taking — and brainstormed small, easy ways to build on that foundation and the children’s interests, things started to shift. With greater pride in the team’s work and the perception of a smaller step to meeting the new expectations around sustainability, confidence grew quickly. And just like that, Hunter was finding many more opportunities to weave sustainability into day-to-day play.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Gosford Cubbyhouse: case study - This is exactly what it looked like in practice. One day, the children noticed a bush in the yard covered in purple berries. Following their lead, Daniela encouraged them to slow down and observe closely. They discovered that of the three birds regularly visiting the playground — kookaburras, king parrots, and bush turkeys — only the bush turkey was eating the berries.</image:title>
<image:caption>Together they researched why, discovering the berries were tart but non-toxic. Curiosity led to the children wanting to lead an experiment: Daniela helped them lay out bird seeds, fruit, and grubs dug from the garden on a tray. Practicing their noticing skills, the children noted that bush turkey had first pick, then the kookaburras, then the king parrots — a clear hierarchy. Then the children noticed the bush turkey starting to dig in the garden beds and hypothesised they had seen them digging for grubs there. The inquiry continued for days, the children then making an observation that the tomato plants were recovering once the grubs were gone.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Gosford Cubbyhouse: case study - A culture of sustainability powered by pride and joy</image:title>
<image:caption>There is still work ahead, with new educators to onboard and colleagues still finding their footing. Meaningful and durable change takes time and cultures are always evolving. But something has unmistakably shifted, with educators who once felt uncertain now arriving at coaching sessions brimming with stories. Educators who once saw sustainability as something separate now find it woven into the fabric of their days. Educators who once thought of sustainability as yet one more thing to do, will now tell you a holistic approach to education for sustainability makes their days easier.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 4 big ideas to transform early childhood education (and the world) - I walked out of the Pedagogy in Practice conference organised by Learn Play Thrive Australia feeling genuinely energised by the clear, unified message that emerged from every single presentation: we already have more power to transform early childhood education than we think, from the inside out. And the changes we can make are within everyone's reach.</image:title>
<image:caption>Major systemic reform is still needed — absolutely. But while we wait for that, there is much we can do. Here are four big ideas that solidified for me thanks to outstanding presentations by Colin Slattery from Semann & Slattery, Dr Gai Lindsay, Associate Professor Kate Highfield, Jessica Staines from Koori Curriculum, Kirsty Liljegren from the Creative Collection and Amelia Scarf from Rhymey. These 4 big ideas are also — not coincidentally — what we need to raise the sustainable citizens our world needs.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/61b97050119f0a4c93170111/fa81b7f7-cc25-4554-9be0-d3b2bf140771/IMG_3514.jpeg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - 4 big ideas to transform early childhood education (and the world)</image:title>
<image:caption>Be the lead inquirer. Dr Gai Lindsay described the educator's role as ‘lead inquirer’ — not the person with the answers, but the person most enthusiastically engaged in asking questions. When a child asks something you can't answer, find out together. Model what genuine curiosity looks like. Prioritise thinking over knowledge. Associate Professor Kate Highfield, Kirsty Liljegren and Dr Gai Lindsay all made the case for deep thinking skills — questioning, problematising, ‘possibility thinking’ (Anna Craft) — being more important than facts. Be the provocateur: ask ‘why do you think?’ and ‘what if?’ more than ‘can you tell me what this is?’ These are the capacities children need for life and for a sustainable future.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog - 4 big ideas to transform early childhood education (and the world)</image:title>
<image:caption>Colin Slattery pleaded for the development of our capacity to think systemically. The natural world doesn't work in silos — it works holistically through intersecting relationships between different things, in endless feedback loops. When you study how a forest functions, you realise it's not the individual plants, animals and fungi that determine the health of the ecosystem, but the quality of the relationships between them. Early childhood education works exactly the same. What does holistic thinking look like in an early years setting? Thinking about the whole child. Amelia Scarf from Rhymey made a beautiful example of music — which benefits the whole child across every dimension of development. Thinking holistically also means recognising that educator wellbeing is inseparable from children's wellbeing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 4 big ideas to transform early childhood education (and the world) - Colin Slattery opened the day with a keynote on the ‘pedagogy of leadership’ which set exactly the right tone. Before we can talk about what we teach or how we teach it, we need to reckon with the fact that everything we do — every choice, every interaction, every story we tell — is an act of leadership.</image:title>
<image:caption>‘All educators are leaders’, Colin Slattery says, ‘because we are constantly modelling not just to children, but to each other’.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog - 4 big ideas to transform early childhood education (and the world)</image:title>
<image:caption>The final — and perhaps most quietly radical — idea of the day: children are your best teachers. Young children ask questions without embarrassment. They try, fail, and try again without harsh self-judgment. They follow what genuinely interests them and slow down for what matters. They find wonder in the ordinary. And they shut down when they don't feel safe. But as adults? We hesitate to ask questions for fear of looking unknowledgeable. We treat failure as something to hide. We rush through experiences to tick boxes. We expect others to perform at their best even when they don't feel safe. What would we do differently if we considered the four-year-old in each of us? Slow down. Rushing through learning, documentation and conversations with children means missing the moments that matter. Slowing down often means doing less — so we think critically about what actually matters and how to work smarter. Create psychological safety. Children learn best when they feel safe to take risks. So do educators. Build a team culture where it's genuinely okay to say ‘I don't know’, try something new, and reflect honestly when something doesn't work. Embrace uncertainty and experiment. Give it a go, refine as you go, and extend yourself the same compassion you'd extend to a child who is learning. These are also competencies we need to grow in children for a sustainable future — the willingness to try, adapt and keep going in the face of complexity.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It’s easy to feel helpless when witnessing the horror that happened at Bondi Beach last week, but we all have the power to drive the change we want to see in the world. I have personal experience with terrorist attacks. My parents were caught in the midst of the 2008 Mumbai bombings and luckily made it out alive, and my sister later witnessed a deadly terror attack from her apartment in Strasbourg, France. Whilst I am still very much processing what happened at Bondi (my brain cleverly activated denial mode), my heart is with everyone affected: with both the Jewish and the Muslim community, with people whose lives will never be the same because of this senseless tragedy, and with young children discovering such atrocities could happen in their backyards too.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Sustainability in Early Childhood Education: It's Easier Than You Think! - We often feel that for great changes to occur, we need to put in significant effort. And that’s not necessarily the case. The changes we make don’t have to be big and overwhelming, they simply have to be the changes most likely to have the greatest effect.</image:title>
<image:caption>Think of acupuncture: the practitioner pokes the needle at a very precise spot in the body which triggers a series of cascading effects. A small intervention, driving massive changes. That’s what we are after. And yes, finding those acupuncture points isn’t generally straightforward, but we have done the research at Endless Play Studio and have found small changes likely to drive massive impact.</image:caption>
